Items & Upgrades

TL;DR

Equipment gives you power. Upgrade items at the blacksmith — but from +3 onwards, a failed upgrade destroys your item unless you use a Protection Stone. Sockets add bonus HP/MP. Attribute Stones incrementally boost secondary stats (risk-free!). Choose your upgrades wisely!

Every item in Helbreath belongs to a type that determines how it can be used by the player.

Upgrade System

Items can be upgraded at the blacksmith using Stone of Xelima (weapons/armor) or Stone of Merien (accessories/shields). Each upgrade attempt has a success chance — on failure from +0 to +2, only the stone is consumed. But from +3 onwards, a failed upgrade destroys the item entirely unless protected.

Destruction Zone (+3 and above): From +3 onwards, a failed upgrade destroys your item. The higher you go, the worse the odds — at +7 you have only a 10% success rate with a 90% chance of losing everything. Always use a Protection Stone for valuable items!
Protection Stones

Protection stones prevent item destruction on a failed upgrade. The stone is consumed whether the upgrade succeeds or fails, but your item survives.

Stone Effect Restriction
Stone of KlonessPrevents item destruction on failureWorks at any upgrade level
Success Upgrade StonePrevents item destruction on failureOnly works on items below +7
Safe Zone: Upgrades from +0 to +2 are always safe — on failure, only the upgrade stone is consumed. Your item stays intact. From +3 onwards, always use a Protection Stone if you can't afford to lose the item.

Socket System

The socket system lets you add HP or MP percentage bonuses to manufacture items. It's a two-step process: first create a Socket Stone from gems, then apply it to your item.

Socket Types
Socket TypeEffectSource Gems
HP SocketIncreases max HP by a %3 gems with HP stat (Second Type 4)
MP SocketIncreases max MP by a %3 gems with MP stat (Second Type 6)
Step 1: Create a Socket Stone
  1. Collect 3 gems of the same type (all HP or all MP).
  2. Combine them at the Socket NPC to create a Socket Stone.
  3. The stone's bonus = average of the 3 gems' values (range 1-255%).
Example: You have 3 HP gems with values 12%, 18%, and 15%. The Socket Stone bonus = (12 + 18 + 15) / 3 = 15% HP.
Step 2: Apply to Item
  1. The target item must be a manufacture item (crafted, not dropped).
  2. The item must not already have a socket or special attributes.
  3. The item must be unequipped.
  4. Apply the Socket Stone → the item gains the HP/MP bonus permanently.
Removing a Socket

You can remove a socket to recover the Socket Stone, but it costs 200 Contribution Points. The original item is destroyed in the process, and the Socket Stone (with its original bonus value) is returned to your inventory.

Socket Rules: Each item can hold only 1 socket. You cannot overwrite an existing socket — you must unsocket first (destroying the item). Only manufacture items can receive sockets; dropped items cannot.

Attribute Stones

Attribute Stones are consumable items that incrementally enhance the secondary attribute on your equipment. Each use increases the stat value by +1, up to the attribute's maximum cap.

TL;DR

Drag an Attribute Stone onto any item that has a secondary stat — it gains +1 to that stat. Repeat until you hit the cap. No risk: if it fails, the stone is not consumed.

How It Works
  1. Drag an Attribute Stone onto an equipment item in your inventory.
  2. If the item has a secondary attribute and it's below maximum, the value increases by +1.
  3. The stone is consumed on success.
  4. If the item has no secondary attribute, or it's already at max, the stone is not consumed — nothing happens.
Zero Risk: Attribute Stones never destroy your item. On failure, the stone stays in your inventory untouched. You can try again on a different item.
Secondary Attributes & Caps

Items can roll with a secondary attribute. Attribute Stones increase the value of that stat. Each attribute type has a different maximum:

Attribute Max Value Effect When Equipped
Poison Resistance50Reduces poison damage taken (%)
Hit Ratio80Increases accuracy (flat)
Defense Ratio50Increases defense rating (flat)
HP Recovery60Increases natural HP regeneration (%)
SP Recovery60Increases natural SP regeneration (%)
MP Recovery60Increases natural MP regeneration (%)
Magic Resistance50Reduces magic damage taken (%)
Physical Absorption20Absorbs physical damage (%)
Magic Absorption20Absorbs magic damage (%)
Critical Damage10Increases critical hit damage (flat)
Experience Bonus50Increases EXP gained (%)
Gold Bonus50Increases gold dropped (%)
Best Attributes to Max: Hit Ratio has the highest cap (80) making it the best raw value gain. Physical/Magic Absorption caps at 20 but is extremely powerful defensively. Experience Bonus at 50% is huge for leveling.
Examples
Example 1 — Hit Ratio: You find a Plate Mail of Accuracy (+3) with Hit Ratio 15. You want to max it out. Since the cap for Hit Ratio is 80, you need 80 − 15 = 65 Attribute Stones. Each stone adds +1, and none are wasted on failure.
Example 2 — Physical Absorption: You loot a Knight Shield with Physical Absorption 3. The cap is 20, so you need 20 − 3 = 17 Attribute Stones to fully max the stat. At PA 20, the shield will absorb 20% of incoming physical damage.
Example 3 — Defense Ratio: A Flameberge drops with Defense Ratio 8. The cap is 50. Using 50 − 8 = 42 Attribute Stones will push it to max, adding +50 to your total defense while equipped.
NPC Price Impact

Secondary attributes increase an item's NPC sell value. The rarest attributes have the highest multipliers:

AttributePrice Multiplier
Magic Absorption20x
Defense Ratio15x
Hit Ratio6x
Magic Resistance5x
Poison Resistance4x
SP Recovery3x
HP Recovery / MP Recovery / Phys. Absorption / Gold Bonus2x
Important: Attribute Stones only work on items that already have a secondary attribute. They cannot add a new attribute to a clean item — the item must have rolled with one when it dropped or was crafted. Check the item tooltip for a secondary stat line before using a stone. DK items are created without secondary attributes and cannot benefit from Attribute Stones.

Dark Knight Set

Dark Knight (DK) items are powerful end-game equipment earned through a one-time NPC quest at max level. They are character-bound — you cannot trade, sell, or drop them. Upgrading DK items costs Majestic Points instead of regular stones.

Acquiring DK Items

Each DK piece is obtained once per character from the DK NPC. Requirements vary by piece.

DK Armor Stats

DR = Defense Ratio (added to your defense), PA = Physical Absorption (damage absorbed per hit), ENDU = Endurance (durability before repair needed).

Majestic Points

Majestic Points are the currency for DK upgrades. They are earned through end-game activities (max: 1,000 points).

DK Armor Upgrade

DK set armor can be upgraded once to its enhanced version (e.g., DK Hauberk → Enhanced DK Hauberk). This costs 15 Majestic Points with a 90% success rate. On failure, points are consumed but the item is never destroyed. Enhanced DK armor can then be further upgraded to +1 maximum using regular upgrade stones.

DK Armor Cap: DK set armor can only be upgraded to +1 maximum. Attempting to upgrade beyond +1 will fail. DK weapons (Flameberge, Magic Staff) have their own separate upgrade paths with higher caps.

Key Difference from Regular Upgrades: The DK tier transformation (Base → Enhanced) never destroys your item on failure — you only lose the 15 Majestic Points. The subsequent +1 upgrade uses regular stones and follows normal rules (safe at +0, since +1 is the cap).

Hero Cape

Hero Capes are special faction reward items that can be upgraded in two stages. Like DK items, they are character-bound.
